What to look for when buying a wifi doorbell? Here’s our guide to buying a smart doorbell in the UK, with our experts identifying 6 key things to look out for . . .
1) Wiring
If you’ve got an existing doorbell, then the smartest thing to do is to use the existing ‘wiring infrastructure’. In the case of a doorbell this normally consists of a 2-wire cable. Brands like Ring and DoorVu sell products that wire directly into your old door-bell’s wires.
2) Remote video-viewing
Being able to see who’s at your door step is super useful. Smart doorbells integrate a camera into your doorbell, meaning that you can see whoever’s pressed it.
3) Remote door-opening
With e-commerce and deliveries on the up, being able to open your door to let in the delivery man is increasingly useful. Most smart doorbells include this functionality.
4) Door bell chime facility
Traditional door bells ring a bell to alert you someone’s at the door. Smart doorbells should include a separate ‘bell’ as standard (meaning that you don’t rely 100% on app notifications).
5) App functionality
Apps are at the core of any ‘smart home product’, and smart doorbells are no different. Smart Doorbell app functionality should include things like remote notifications and remote video access.
6) Router connectivity & latency
Ring
The Ring doorbell was one of the first innovators in the space. Based in the US, Ring’s product’s definitely sophisticated – but also very expensive. Price starts at £159
